5 Diabetes Symptoms You Should Know

Health

November is a significant month in health awareness calendars; it's observed as National Diabetes Month.

During this time, communities worldwide unite to raise awareness about diabetes, a condition affecting millions.

Symbolically, many wear blue to show support and commemorate those impacted by the disease.

Understanding Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects how the body turns food into energy.

There are various types, with type 1 and type 2 being the most common.

Type 1 diabetes occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.

Type 2 diabetes develops when the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn't produce enough.

Additionally, temporary diabetes, like gestational diabetes, may occur during pregnancy.

Recognising The Five Symptoms

Knowing the symptoms of diabetes is crucial for early detection and management. Five key signs to be aware of:

  1. Frequent urination: an increase in urination, especially during the night, might be an indicator of diabetes.
  2. Excessive thirst: constant feelings of thirst, regardless of how much you drink, can be a sign of high blood sugar.
  3. Persistent hunger: despite eating, those with diabetes may experience constant hunger as their cells don't receive enough energy.
  4. Unexplained weight loss: sudden weight loss without changes in diet or exercise could be a symptom of diabetes, particularly in type1.
  5. Chronic fatigue: feeling extremely tired, fatigued or experiencing a lack of energy can be associated with fluctuating blood sugar levels.

Note: you might not have all of these symptoms. If you’re concerned, speak to a health professional and get a glucose check.
